Bairds Road Mainfreight Primary - Art Inquiry - visiting other children as artists

Bairds Mainfreight Primary School welcomed a group of R20 and R16 children into their Year 5 class. Their teacher Mrs Bedford was very welcoming  and her class had made a fantastic slideshow presentation about their Art Experience.

Sunnyhills children had their interview questions all ready to go. They buddied up and off they went with iPads to record the interview!

A big thank you to Ms Kardos, Evie's Mum, who helped with transport and the interviewing!!

Now we have been able to use this experience as a great launching pad into our own Art Inquiry starting this week!

A Dutchman Builds a Rollercoaster to Sell his House

Rollercoaster rides on Google Cardboard

A Moment in Time (Writing)

How can you imagine something if you haven't been there yourself?
Using the Google Cardboard app each child has had the opportunity to experience a ride on a roller coaster through virtual reality on a Smart Phone!

A Dietician Mrs Robb visits to talk about sugar!!

Can you read the labels on the sides of the cereal boxes? How many grams of sugar does 100g of cereal have? Can you compare the amount to another box of cereal? Talk about this at home and look inside your cupboard to find out what you are eating. You only need 8- 10 teaspoons of sugar each day so think about that when you are eating your breakfast tomorrow!

Our Epic Enviro BreakOut

Today Room 20 persevered and problem solved to complete the Enviro BreakOut with Mrs Daniel. Here's what they said about it:

"We were finding the clues. I liked the part when we wrote them down, cause we were reading carefully". Siena

"It was epic!" Hayden

"I liked finding the clues, because it felt like finding treasure. I used the alphabet to crack the code. I counted to H and it was 8. I figured it out." Dean

"You have to use your brain, 'cause it is a riddle." Olivia

"It was fun to run around in the fresh air." Brodie

"You have to work hard to find the answers." Jessica

"We were looking behind trees and bushes." Chloe C

I felt fun and excited. I couldn't wait til we found the last clue." Jacob

I enjoyed it, because when i got to the last one I felt happy because i did all of them." Joshua

Shop Open! Using our place value skills to use money.

This term R20 has opened a shop. Some children are the shop keepers and some are the customers. They have decided how much our items are and labelled them with the price in dollars and cents. When you pay you must work out the money by yourself and if there will be change.

Here Ali is the shopkeeper and Hamish is buying some toy cars! Ali is working the cash register and giving Hamish some change.

This is Jacob stocking up on his groceries. I wonder how much he is going to spend!?

Tinker Time in R20

We have been having a 'tinker' with electronics and having so much fun!

Groups of 4 were given a set of components to make a basic circuit. The circuit required 2AA batteries and when the components were correctly placed the helicopter took off. Lots of patience, cooperation and thought went into the process. Well done R20 I was really impressed by your skills today!!

Art Inquiry begins!

Room 20 and R16 are beginning an exciting art inquiry where we will be studying art by local artists and using their techniques to compose our own art.

Today we began by discussing our subject - Sunnyhills School houses Tui Takehe Hoiho and Kea.

In House Groups the children looked at photographs of the birds and discussed with their buddies what they noticed about the birds' features and then their prior knowledge of the habits and habitat of the birds. Then each person drew a coloured sketch and wrote a short description using their prior knowledge.

Our next step is to collect more information either written or on the Internet and share it with everyone at school.

Woohoo! 164 plastic milk bottle tops!

Thank you to all those who have collected plastic milk bottle tops for us as part of Sunnyhills enviro art. Jacob and Dean and Haden and Carter counted them up and we have 164 so far yay! Keep collecting rather than throwing them into the recycling bin and we can create art at school with them!

The Sunnyhills Star News! The Weather!

Today we had Weather Reports using our Interactive Whiteboard.

Chloe T and Chloe C and Krish wrote the day, date and year on the laptop and then a few people had a first go at choosing the weather on the slide show.

Olivia and Jacob dressed up a bit to get into 'character'! Do you agree with Weather Reporters today? Did they get it right?

Room 20 see if you can find out what the weather report will be for Tuesday and share it with us tomorrow.
When we have had time to practice what to say and what to include in our Weather Reports we will record them for you. Watch out TVNZ!!
