Wildlife Photography

The 2016 Comedy Wildlife Photography Competition

Photo Prompts: Using photographs of animals caught on camera with unusual or amusing expressions or poses.
What is the cheetah doing on the side of the road? Nearby just happens to be a road sign with 40 on it - could this be what the cheetah is looking at?

Is this Zebra calling out to their herd? Has another Zebra done something to make the Zebra call out, does it have toothache or is it yawning?

This Toad certainly looks friendly, what's the joke? Use your imagination and tell us a short story.

Zoo Maths - thanks to Mrs Madden!

Hippo Maths - October 2016

Photographer William Warby snapped these 2 kissing hippos at the Whipsnade Zoo in England. Actually, it's hard to tell whether they're playing, kissing, or just shoving each other out of the way. Hippo is short for "hippopotamus,' which means "river horse."

These round, grey lumps are the 3rd largest land mammal, after the elephant and the white rhinoceros. The funny thing is, their closest cousins are another set of chubby mammals: whales and dolphins! Well, hippos love water just like they do, and it looks like they love to play, too.

Questions:
1 : Hippos need to breathe every 3 minutes. If a hippo swims for 3 minutes, comes up for 1 minute, then goes under for 3, how many minutes does that take?
Bonus: If it keeps up that pattern, is the hippo swimming or breathing at 10 minutes?

Extension : A hippo can live until 45 years. If a hippo's grandchildren are all ages that divide neatly into 45, with 1 hippo of each age, at least how many grandchildren must it have?

Adaptation and Animals

Room 20's Inquiry this term is based on Adaptation and Animals. We visited the Auckland Zoo last week. We have been learning to skim and scan through books and the Auckland Zoo web site for information. We are gathering the information to plan and write a report on our findings.
We have made camouflaged skinks in painting and collage.

Watch this space for the next step in our Inquiry!

Making and trialling parachutes

After reading one of our reading group's texts 'How to make a parachute' some children have made their own and tried it out today.

Reading non fiction books gives us all new learning experiences and teaches us about topics we would like to explore. This book helped us to find something to do with the pile of soft plastic bags, and unwanted little toys that others have outgrown.

Pac Man part 3

Wow an end result to 2 days of Maths thinking! If you would like to know what our challenges were take a look at our window and see if you can solve them too!

Now we are going to use our pictures to revise how to estimate, count using arrays, count in 2s, 5s, and measure perimeter and area.
We are going to draw our own versions on grid paper and make our own mazes. Then we will write instructions using Rotation and Direction words. Watch this space!

Day 2 of Pac Man

This group are reading their challenge before deciding if they need to go out into the school to explore or ask another teacher for clues, or work out the problem themselves.

Measuring time, length, and using clocks and themselves!!

Ali wants to count how many stick it notes it has taken to make Pac Man! Will he count in arrays, groups of 2 or 5 or 1-1?

Tim has a try too, he estimated first and them started to count. How would you count them up?

Pac Man Challenge

Focus: to revise Maths Knowledge and Skills from during the year in the context of our School Conmunity!
Room 20 invited R21 and R16 to participate in our challenge too - check out their windows this week as well!

Children were put into groups of 3 and given a bag of 10 challenges to complete in any order.

Each challenge was awarded 2 stick it notes when Mrs Trembath had listened to  how the group had solved each challenge, before they were given the go ahead to choose another challenge from their bag.

Our own straw stadiums!!

Mr Armstrong Jessica's Dad was very helpful today and helped us with our own creative designs.

Lots of fine motor skills, cutting, sticking, estimating, changing ideas and adaptation - and great fun!
