Looking Great Fabulous Amazing Fantastic Everyone!

Dear Families for those of you who are busy and find it tricky to visit our room in person, this is what Room 20 is looking like right now!
Soon we have to take everything down for the end of the year so we thought we would show you all now!

Our Class Dojos. We are all different and we appreciate that fact when we are learning and working together. We each designed our own character and wrote the speech bubble to describe what our character is like.

These are our camouflaged Skinks and Stick Insects - can you find them? What are their Adaptations to their Environment or Habitat?

Look at this herd of Zebras! The idea was to learn how to paint a sunset background and show silhouettes with the trees. And then the Zebra is in the front or the foreground. The black and white patterning links well into maths and was a challenge to those that are used to patterning only from left to right! Black tissue paper was added to enhance the 3-D illusion.

Look at these glorious giraffes! Hands on construction is always fun and it's a great way to recycle found objects. We have used giraffes as a subject for Maths Inquiry learning  about estimation and measuring height.

Hockey Small Sticks Wednesday

Cam from Auckland Hockey has been teaching and coaching us through hockey this term and we love it! It's a great team sport for girls and boys to play. Cam has supplied all our specially sized hockey sticks and balls so we can learn at our own level.

As you can see we are enjoying the game so much it's hard for Mrs Trembath to take a still photo!

Using Lego to compare 1/2 fractions for Maths Week!!

What can you see on the Lego? 8 dots what will half of that be - 4/8. What will half of that be 2/8. What will half of that be 1/8.

We repeated the thinking with 1/6 and 1/4. We are thinking and learning about the whole fraction and the denominator and the numerator.

Wonderful Wriggly Worms

Today Room 20 had an Enviro Day with Mrs Daniel. We learnt all about worms, in a very hands on way. We set up a new Middle School worm bin; complete with 2 000 wiggly, squiggly worms to munch our lunch scraps and make worm tea food for our edible gardens. We can't wait to feed, water and care for our wonderful worms.

School assembly today!

The Peer Mediators were part of Special Spot today! They are an important part of the playground. You can talk to them anytime if you have a problem that you need help with in the playground.

Nathan was awarded the certificate today for his super problem solving skills in Measurement this week.

Problem solving in Measurement

Today we had a problem to solve using our knowledge about measuring length. Mrs Trembath gave us only a little bit of help because she wanted to see what we could do by ourselves!
The problem:
What does a metre look like? In everyday life we do not always have a metre ruler handy so we use a smaller ruler 30cm long and add measurements together. I wonder who can do that?
Take an A4 piece of paper and cut it into strips. Make a strip that you estimate to be a metre long by taping it together. How are you going to check it is a metre long?

Nathan and Carter worked very carefully to check their metre.

Not only did the children have to use measuring skills but the ability to estimate and add in tens. Many wrote or drew their workings and strategies down too. Some children were surprised by how long or short a metre was. Great mathmatical thinking today everyone!

Perhaps you can use rulers or measuring tapes at home to measure and record your results. Think about how many centimetres are in a metre! How do you write metre and centimetre?
